Remember the Vacuum that Sucked?

July 12, 2011   By Becca 6 Comments

A few months ago we bought a new vacuum.  I raved about how well my vacuum sucked in a blog post.
We had purchased the red LG.  There were many features I loved about this vacuum like the retractable cord, bagless dirt collection, and amazing suction.  This vacuum really sucked!  Every time I used it I was thoroughly disgusted by the amount of dirt and grime it picked up.
Then, it happened.  My LG stopped working.  It just stopped.  It had only been a few months since I purchased it, so I took it back to Home Depot and the nice people gave me a new one.  Problem solved, except it happened again a few months after that!  That’s when I decided to do a little research. (I’ll be honest.  The research I did was… call some really smart friends who have the same vacuum and ask them why my vacuum keeps dying.)  Turns out it was a user error!  I wasn’t washing the filters regularly enough and that was making the vacuum overheat before I could finish vacuuming my whole house.
I started washing my filters more regularly.  Problem solved again.  Until…
the roller stopped rolling, making the vacuum useless!
I figured it was just a broken belt, but then it started working again!  Then, on July 3rd, the day before a party at my house, it died for the last time.
We took that vacuum that sucked right back to Home Depot and bought this baby.
Yep, that’s a Dyson.  No, it’s not one of those $500 fancy pants vacuums.  Although I’d love to own the Animal, I just can’t justify spending that much on a vacuum.  I couldn’t even afford the Dyson’s with the ball technology.  This was a $300 multifloor vacuum. It was a little more than the LG, but not by much.  I had paid $199 for my LG, but since I purchased it the price has gone up to $299!  I’m not sure why there was a $100 jump in price. So far, I think this Dyson is awesome!
Here are a few of my thoughts, after comparing and using both vacuums in my house.
*The LG has a retractable cord and they Dyson does not.  That was almost a deal breaker because I LOVED that feature on my LG.
*I like the placement of the cord on the Dyson.  The cord got in my way all the time with the LG.
*The LG did not have a very good stair attachment.
*The Dyson stair attachment is the best thing about the vacuum, in my opinion. It’s the right size and shape for cleaning stairs.
*The Dyson tube, on the other hand, is really annoying when you vacuum stairs.
*The cord is longer on the Dyson.  Huge +!
*I thought the LG sucked, but my Dyson REALLY sucks! I swear I can see dust bunnies bounding toward the vacuum.
*The LG said it worked on hardwood floors, but it wouldn’t pick up anything at all.  Nothing.  At all.
*My Dyson is amazing on hardwoods. I may never use a broom again in my life.
*The Dyson is a little bulky.  It does not fit well under my furniture.
*Most important comparison…. the Dyson works and the LG stopped working.
So, there you have it.  I had a vacuum that sucked, but then it sucked in a different way.  I think I’m a Dyson fan now.
Happy vacuuming!

I hear this type of complain all the time from people who end up owning ten vacuums in their lifetime because they are made to be disposable instead of repairable. Such a landfill waste!
Here's my story. I bought a Kirby 15 years ago for (are you sitting down?) $1200. I have never had to repair it nor has it ever broken down. i have raised children and shedding dogs. I have had wall-yo-wall carpeting and hardwood floors. We have vacuumed cars and pets and basements and attics. It is heavy. Made of metal. Totally worth it. Buy a Kirby and you will own it your whole life.

Thanks for this post! I have been working on getting the other half to approve an upgrade from the $30 vacs we bought for this house when we moved in almost 4 yrs ago (yes, vacs plural as we got one for upstairs & one for down) & I have been dying for a dyson but now reading this I am totally going to investigate that lil model there!! great compromise! thanks!!

Dyson is awesome! I bought mine 5 years ago and it's still going! I, too, had vacuums dying on me like crazy, so I thought I'd go for quality and I haven't been disappointed. Plus, I really think it picks up more dirt than other vacuums!

Ouch! It was very unfortunate that this happened to you, Becca. At times, a large cleaning equipment may hamper one's efficiency in cleaning. Cords get tangled up, equipment too large to fit and many more. These are some of the problems that could be avoided by buying smaller and more effective cleaning tools. Just remember to get them from trusted sellers.
