School doesn’t start around here until after Labor Day, but I know that isn’t the case everywhere. Some of you are gearing up for back to school already. As a teacher, I know first hand that there is a direct relationship between how organized a child is and how well they do in school. Every day I see kids who are rushing in with no backpack, folder, or snack. Then I see the kids who are prepared, calm, and organized. I know which kid I’d rather be. (And which kid’s mom I’d rather be.) Don’t get me wrong, we have chaotic mornings around here too, but there are a few things I like to have in place to help fight off the craziness and help my kids’ confidence shine.

The Homework Station and Art Cubby
This week I reorganized our art area. My kids like to do their homework at the kitchen table. Our art cubby is on the backside of the kitchen cupboards so it’s the perfect place to store everything they need for special projects, writing assignments, and book reports.

If you haven’t noticed, there are a few school supply sales out there right now. NOW is the BEST time to stock up on school supplies for your home as well as school. I always restock my kids’ home art supplies in the fall, but I also buy enough so that when the markers dry up in February, they are ready to go. Guess what, if you buy them in February they will cost 3 times as much.

I need to say one more thing about homework (and I know that preschoolers and kindergarteners have homework too these days). The kids in my school, as well as my own kids, have a folder that they bring home every day. THAT FOLDER NEEDS TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY! It’s really important and drives teachers CRAZY when kids don’t have their folder. So, have kids put their folders in their backpacks as soon as they are done. Nothing screams, “My parents and I are so disorganized!” like a kid who never shows up to school prepared. (Stepping off my soapbox now.)

Entry Way Organization
That brings me to entryway organization. Very soon, I will be making sure the coats, bags, backpacks, and shoes are ready to go. This is the room the backpacks are hung in. It’s my mini laundry room, turned mudroom, that is right next to the garage door. Making sure my kids’ coats and shoes are organized is a CONSTANT challenge in our house. I really don’t like it when they can’t find the shoes they want in the morning. It just sets the tone for chaos. I find that calm kids are happy kids. Frantic kids who are running around, crazy-upset that they can’t find their grey boots, are not happy kids. We’ll keep working on the concepts of hang up your coat and put your shoes in the cubby.

Library Books
The coat room is also the place for library books. The brown bag is filled with books ready to go back to the public library. The white bin stays there. It’s for library books we are still reading or haven’t started reading yet. Let me just tell you how devastating it is for a five year old when all of their classmates get to check out library books, but they can’t because they couldn’t find their book before school. Keeping the books in one central place helps kids have less chaos as they are heading out the door for school. Their confidence doesn’t shine when they have their heads hanging down because they are so sad that they forgot their books.

Reference Papers
Preschool and grade school teachers send home lots of papers. With two kids in school now, I know I’ll have lots to keep track of. I bought one of those magnetic, stick to the fridge, file holders at Staples. Then I bought five folders and labeled them. I have one for each kid, one for me, one for my hubby, and one that just says Home. That way when I need to know what time my son has football on a particular day, I know the schedule is right there. I also keep classlists, teacher contact info, PE days, and all that good stuff in there.

Home Management Binder
That brings me to my favorite part of my back to school organizing.

My home management notebook has so many wonderful forms and checklists in it. (Hint: You can google just about any form you’re looking for and it pops right up for you to print.) I have dividers for menus, shopping lists, chores, emergency contacts, babysitter information, family birthdays, and much more.

I think I’m well on my way to an organized start to the school year. Then the Holidays will get here and everything will be thrown into a tailspin. Oh well, at least in September and October we’ll be organized. I even organized my junk drawers earlier this week.

Well, I don’t have a real mudroom and I don’t have the budget of those fancy magazines who stage the mudrooms above.

When we moved into our house, the washer and dryer were on the right hand wall of our laundry room. When we bought our new fancy-pants washer and dryer, we put in a new floor, painted, and switched the washer and dryer to the back wall. Then we hired a California-Closets-Type company to put in our cupboards at the top of the wall.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="213" m$="true" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_0060.jpg" width="320" />

The shoe cubby came from Storables and I was so pleased that it was a perfect match to our new woodwork.

The bins make me happy.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="320" m$="true" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_0053.jpg" width="213" />

We added a few hooks and our tiny little space could almost be called a mudroom.

One problem…. There was no place to hang backpacks, swim bags, or purses.

The solution…. The backpack rack from Storables! It’s only $4.95 and attaches to any door without leaving marks or holes.

My kids had been throwing their backpacks on the floor of our tiny little mudroom/laundry room. We couldn’t even make our way to the washing machine or find a single pair of shoes.

There.
A place for everything and everything in its place.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="320" m$="true" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_0168.jpg" width="213" />

The laundry room can finally be checked off my To Do list! It’s been a long process. We do a little project and then wait for the money tree to grow. Then we do another small project and wait some more. We moved into our house five years ago and I think I’m finally done with all of my little projects for the smallest room in the house.

When we moved in, we had the old top load washer and matching white dryer, from Sears. They were a wedding present from Great Grandma, back in 1995. We brought them to our new house with us, because they were in fine working condition. Well, I can’t say I was too sad, two years ago, when the washer went, “CLUNK!” and stopped working forever.

We started shopping and found the great set, above, but they were so big that we had to have the plumbing moved so that we could reorient the washer and dryer. The old set was along the right wall. Once the plumbing was moved, we could place the new set along the back and actually have room for a mini-mudroom. It was a dream come true! We finally had a place to hang coats, right where we walk in the door. Is this the perfect mudroom? No. Is it really big enough for the entire family to use? No. But, it does add enough space for the kids’ coats, most of their shoes, and a place to throw their backpacks after school.

<img decoding="async" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/laundry-room-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449269811055581042" />

Since we moved the washer and dryer, space planning was a big issue. I wanted to be able to maximize storage in this tiny space. We had California Closets come out to give us some ideas of how to best use this space. Ultimately, I loved their plan, but couldn’t afford their price tag. My sister had used a company called Space Plus. Judy came out and came up with the perfect plan. It allowed for basket storage above, a place for coats, and a shoe cubby below.

I had a really hard time finding the perfect wicker baskets to fit this space. After buying and returning three expensive sets, I finally settled on cheap plastic. It doesn’t look too bad. It’s durable, practical, and the price was right.

I LOVE to organize things in labeled bins. So, out came the scrapbook paper and laminator. I think the labels may be my favorite part of the room.

<img decoding="async" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/IMG_0057.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449300906250840962" />
<img decoding="async" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/IMG_0054.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449300896033186994" />

Next came new floor. My husband wouldn’t let me do it myself, so we hired it out. That was installed just a few weeks ago.

<img decoding="async" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/laundry-room-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449269831701217074" />

All that was left to do was a curtain. One day I was thinking about what to put on that window. (I spend a lot of time just looking around my rooms and thinking. Thinking. Thinking. Not doing. Just Thinking.) Finally, I was fed up. I went to the craft room to see what fabric I had on hand. I have been thinking about using paint drop cloths as drapes in my family room and I just happened to have the small one in my craft room… perfect. Perfect size. Perfect color. I didn’t even need to cut the fabric. One line of stitching across the top and it was read to hang.

A little twine from the gardening box made the perfect, rustic, tie-back.

<img decoding="async" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://homeiswheremystorybegins.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/IMG_0059.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449302555887311618" />

I’m thrilled to have the laundry room done and move on to other projects. I just wish it looked this clean and organized every day! I guess that old saying is right- Take a picture it will last longer…
